Iconic Images Q&A

  • what is the light source?
  • For Judy the light source is a studio lighting, and for Elvis the light source is stage lighting for a show.
  • what direction is the light coming from?
  • The light source comes in two ways for Judy. one comes from behind her and one comes from below her. For Elvis the light comes from above front proving that he is on a stage.
  • what is the best way to recreate the lighting you see in the image?
  • Use two cameras instead of just one to give the full affect of the image of Judy Garland. Put the light further away symbolizing a stage light and use a dark background.
  • where is the camera in relation to the subject?
  • For Elvis the camera is below him probably a picture from the audience. The picture of Judy garland is a portrait, so it’s right on her eyes level.
  • how is the person posed in relation to the camera?
  • Elvis is posed above the camera because he is on stage, and Judy is posed on a chair so the camera is right on her, close up.

David Hockney Joiner Questions

1.) The important thing about capturing movement for a joiner type is to stay in position and follow the person with your camera, for perspective.

2.) They are taken at different times and in different ways so when they’re joined together they look as if something is moving throughout the picture.

3.) They are both able to be placed wherever it is pleased, except on photo shop you have to pick a canvas size.

4.) pros: Photo shop can be seen digitally and you don’t need to waste all of the photo paper. Cons: in the event of a Power outage, without saving your work all of your progress will be lost and you will have to start over.

5.) I prefer the Broken Up style because it’s fun to figure out what the picture is saying instead of just seeing a joined picture, it kind of makes me feel like.. why didn’t you just take one picture of the whole scene instead of wasting your time putting them together to look the exact same.
